Lt Col Charlie Brown The post office could save a lot of money by doing away with Saturday delivery. With today's e-mail and other communications, my opinion is Saturday delivery isn't all that important. Keep the office open for folks who can't get there during the week.

Saturday delivery? Heck, Sunday delivery is now a thing for packages.
Personally I'm ok with this if they overhaul the chain of command of the post office. My dad has his own beef with the PO, and he retired out of it a few years ago.

I can attest to that their retirement pay sucks because it is not based on the money you earned but by the base pay which USPS workers never make because of the forced overtime. I averaged $15,000 to $20,000 over my base pay which is not included in the retirement pay so you virtually work overtime for free. Cut all sunday deliveries except Express mail which the sender paid extra for it, since losing the Amazon contract packages have dropped by 60%-70% so no need anymore. Start consolidating Postmasters to manage more than one office in the mid to small office range. Start cutting jobs at the top no need to micro-manage, cut paper copies and use cd's or flash drives to backup work. Hire more service people at the counters and carriers and open back up some of the processing centers to get back to the real standards that DeJoy changed because his master plan was a great failure as he changed the 1-3 day delivery to 2-5 days because he couldn't meet the 200 year old standards. Example i ordered a package 350 miles from my home and with his plan that drivers (which are mainly contracted out) to 6 hours of driving time it took my package 8 frustrating days to reach my home when before it took on average 2 days. The PO Office in my town window is open 8-4:30 form when i started in this office 20+ years ago the window hours were 8-5:30 and had 6 clerks when i left the had 3 and service has gone to the outhouse as DeJoy raised rates every six months (blame the board of governors for that) and gave less and less service in return also my PO are short 2 carriers which forces massive overtime every week and slows overall delivery on 2 routes. I Thank God he is gone.

Efficiency? The Post Office?
I live 4 miles straight line distance from the nearest Post Office. I don't get mail delivered to my home address, I have to rent a PO Box at another Post Office 9 miles the opposite direction.
There have been days where I have stood in line for over 2 hours to pick up packages, especially during the holidays. The only good thing, and this has never been the case on the mainland, is I am on a first name basis with the employees there. They do work hard but I believe their system is so antiquated, it's only is good at failure.

I thought the Marine Corps was behind on computer tech when they finally put Windows XP on our computers; only to find out from my dad that his post office was still using Windows NT.

That goes back to being short handed on purpose paying overtime (which doesn't count toward retirement) to the Postal Service is better than paying another employee benefits. Right now the Postal Carriers are in arbitration on their contract which is over two years behind as the post office management are fighting giving carriers a 1.3% raise for each of the next four years that is only 5.2% while other related companies have given over 10% each year. I worked 38.5+ years and Never made close to what UPS pays it's drivers.

SGT Aaron Atwood - The Postal Service contracts out it computer services and upgrades which are far between and way behind My computer at home is 10-20 or even 30 times faster and several gigabits more memory, it is sad i know from experience when i was supervising waiting for the computer to update my inputs it was like wait for AOL Dial up.
