APOD: 2025 February 27 - Open Star Clusters M35 and NGC 2158

Good Red Friday afternoon, Rallypoint, and welcome to a two-fer edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for February 27-28, 2025.
We start with the February 27th APOD: Messier 35 (M35) and NGC 2158. Both are considered to lie in the constellation Gemini, but M35 is closer to Earth (2,970 light years). NGC 2158 is estimated to be 9,000 light years distant. M35 was first discovered by Swiss astronomer Philippe Loys de Chéseaux around 1745 and independently discovered by English doctor and amateur astronomer John Bevis before 1750. NGC 2158 was discovered by William Herschel on November 16, 1784.

Those are some crazy distances between us and them. Each light year is approximately 6 trillion miles. That's some serious time on the road traveled.
