Despite the Evidence it seems there are always people too weak to understand and overcome the temptations or even influence by others to various harmful additions. It's too bad they can't grasp the warning of seeing others that are addicted or take in the information on the problems and avoid them altogether. By the time they reach a certain point the brain just doesn't work as well and unless the stop may well end their life a lot earlier.

Here is the at risk personality combo: high novelty seeking, high reward dependence, low harm avoidance and high impulsivity

All addictive substances create acute Organic Brain Syndrome which over time becomes persisting. The most common clinical presentation is poly-substance abuse. All these subs cause neuromodulation of core neurotransmitters.
Gambling addiction is actually a consequence of OCD. There is not evidence of OBS!

I have never been addicted to liquor or narcotics. I enjoy alcoholic drinks but rarely more than a max of two drinks, maybe twice in a week. Narcotics make me puke. The only two that I can tolerate after surgery is small doses Demerol or small doses on Dilaudid.
Yes I was hooked on cigarettes for many years. I would quit cold turkey, I tried nicotine gum, etc. Finally I found the ticket for me. The AF made a regulation you could not smoke in the hospital. You had to go to a room in the basement that the air was pumped outside or outside the building. You were not allowed below the second floor in scrubs. I also found a solution to my habit. Throw away your cigarettes and tell yourself no for the 10 minutes of a nicotine urge. There are a great deal of 10 minute time frames to begin with, but the get longer and longer by the day. I gave up cigarets Dec 1, 1986 and have never had another one.
I do know colleagues from the AF that were addicted to narcotics. They were found out and adjudicated, and all give bad conduct discharges, no retirement pay.
Addiction is a terrible thing, regardless of what you are addicted to.

I won't say I never overindulged in booze I did but smarted up and cut down to rarely consuming any and a max of two when I did have anything at all. Never even tried or wanted to try any narcotics. Smoking, was doing a pack and a half a day of Lucky Strikes and quit cold turkey at age 14 and never smoked again ever. In over 40 years of Police work locked up enough people (hundreds) for narcotics or booze in the case of driving or conduct in some cases.
