On March 26, 1953, American medical researcher Dr. Jonas Salk announces on a national radio show that he has successfully tested a vaccine against poliomyelitis, the virus that causes the crippling disease of polio.
In 1952—an epidemic year for polio—there were 58,000 new cases reported in the United States, and more than 3,000 died from the disease. For his work in helping to eradicate the disease, which is known as “infant paralysis” because it mainly affects children, Dr. Salk was celebrated as the great doctor-benefactor of his time.

His discovery affected the entire world. Not many people have done that. He didn't receive a penny in royalties because he thought the vaccine was too important to make money off it.

I Recall Our Being Given The Sugar Cubes With The Vaccine Inside When We Were In Middle School, And Later The Injection....I Also Met A Man Whom Contracted Polio Just 6 Months Before The Vaccines Were Given Out, Paralyzed From The Waist Down & Had To Use Crutches To Move Around ~ One "L" Of A Way To Live

But One Of My Older Brothers Ian, Served In The Merchant Marines And Traveled All Over The World. There Was A Time When Their Ship Broke Done Upon Making A Delivery Of Crude Oil To The British Virgin Islands, And His Ship Couldn't Be Repaired For 2 Weeks.
By The Time He Left The British Virgin Islands, It's Name Had To Be Changed; Now It's Just Referred To As "The Islands," Everything Else Remains The Same.
Not From What I've Been Told By The Big Boys, No.
