Seems that an M88 should not have been anywhere near there. I know terrain can be tricky but from the description it sounds like an area that should have been _known_ as not being trafficable by armored vehicles.

Yes.. OCOKA analysis. Good point. Also, an M88 is not usually travelling alone. I wonder if they went out on a recovery call and got misoriented.

COL (Join to see) - Tactically an M88 should never be alone, but administratively it happens a lot unless you are driving on public roads where there is a rule requiring a wheeled vehicle ahead of tracked vehicles.
You'd think that the crew of a recovery vehicle would be highly aware of marshy terrain, but sometimes they are overconfident because they are the guys who pull everyone else out of being stuck in the mud. Soggy ground can look solid until you break through the top layer and start sinking, but it is hard to imaging an M88 going under fast enough for the crew not to get off unless it fell off or through a bridge or rolled over rather than just sinking into soggy ground. There has to be a lot more to this story. Hopefully there will be a thorough investigation to reduce the chances of something like this happening again.
