I think the Booker was caught in a bad transition period and the changes to its requirements really signaled the Army wasn't really sure of its needs. I have always thought we needed a medium tank (like the M4 Sherman was in WW2) to support infantry operations along with Main Battle Tanks. But I'm not in the policy making arena and never will be.

The army needs the Booker for exactly the same reason it needs the Airborne and Airmobile divisions -- to die valiantly -- and in the process create a reason for the US to actually take the situation seriously.

Light forces are there to provide another "Pearl Harbor" or "9/11" moment.

They are also useful for calling an adversary's bluff, as they did successfully at the beginning of Desert Shield, before real forces could be deployed. But calling an adversary's bluff only works if the adversary really is bluffing.

Calm down, all you Light Fighters, don't shoot the messenger. I know you are all highly skilled and highly motivated, and given the need I'm sure you will make it costly for any adversary, but the simple fact is that your job as Boots On The Ground is to be a token presence while waiting for heavier forces to arrive by ship or by rail because we don't have the capability to rapidly deploy heavy forces by air.
