I just don't see any possible upside to alienating our geographically and figuratively closest ally.

It did get a liberal elected as PM. Before Trump talked about invading them, I think most were leaning toward a conservative candidate.

I'll see if I can find the speech by the Prime Minister of Alberta. She isn't happy with Carney. I took the meaning of the speech to be a demand for economic and political autonomy backed by a rather thinly vialed threat of independence if they didn't get some very expansive concessions.

For some reason, Trump seems to think we are supporting Canada anyway. Might as well make it part of the US, he thinks. He seems to misunderstand what the trade deficit is all about. Our trade deficit with Canada is about 3% of our total deficit world wide
