Served as a detailed inspector general, so I know all about von Steuben! Also, being a detailed IG is an interesting and enlightening assignment, but I can’t say it was enjoyable.
It’s one of the few assignments that requires a special oath, generally administered by the commanding general.

It’s a tenured position, LTC Trent Klug, and meaning one can’t serve in the position more than three years. Many think that it’s because of power usurpation potential. In fact, IGs have no power. Their findings are simply presented to the commander, who may or may not take action.
Personally, I was glad to get away from being an IG because I saw the worst of the worst of the Army, day in and day out. Many times, it was the same soldier! That’s why I think the position is tenured, because otherwise, one becomes jaundiced to the same crappola…all…the…time.

LTC Stephen C. I can understand why its tenured. It would be a tough thing to see the worst behind the scenes stuff would not be fun. I saw a little as an Aide de Camp. I learned of things about leaders and Soldiers that were very tough to unlearn. A couple of them became my bosses later on. It was very hard to work for them.

LTC Stephen C. - I had no idea what an I.G. is tasked to do!
Big shoes to fill, still, all these year later. Read that Ben Franklin met von Steuben on a voyage across the pond and thought he would be the right person to get the job done.
