Despite a bipartisan push to disentangle the US economy from China, the military-industrial base still relies heavily on Chinese suppliers, a new study from analysis software firm Govini warns. And, the company’s leader says, that’s not the only weak link.
“Defense supply chains today are incredibly brittle. They’re not resilient. They’re very, very intricately tied to foreign suppliers,” Govini CEO Tara Murphy Dougherty told reporters Thursday. “We try to quantify that.”
Bottom line up front, Western defense firms have struggled just to meet the intense surge of demand from years of large-scale combat in Ukraine. A war with China would be much worse — and Murphy Dougherty doesn’t think that US defense production, stockpiles and supply chains are up to the task.
“The data is unequivocal: The United States is not prepared for the war that we may have to enter if China said, ‘today is the day,’” she said. “It’s not that I think we would automatically lose — by no means do I think that’s the case — but I do not believe that the industrial base is prepared to support the material demands of the Department of Defense.”

Lt Col Charlie Brown I have always said our federal government should be supporting the United States industries and economy and this is one of the major reasons why. What do we make for their military? Probably nothing.

Imagine what the 1st astronaut was feeling on the first shot and knowing everything used to make the shot was low bid. our own case, there is a company hired to replace floor tile is out Post Office. It was suppose to be down for 10 days and reopen this Monday, I don't know what happened but just received a notice that it will be closed for an unknown time to fix what the original contractor screwed up. Nearest PO is 25 miles away.

Sgt Jim Belanus - That is an issue with the government and getting bids to have work done. They don't investigate the quality of the vendors work before awarding the contract.

unfortunately the building is privately owned and rented to USPS and has been since it was built. For what the USPS has spent in rent they could have built it and maintained way cheaper than rent checks for over 60 years. I believe it was built in 65 give or take a couple years and built what would be called handicapped accessible

I fear there are shut down features hidden in items built outside the US. No matter our trade status with China, they are an enemy state to our way of life.

There are many products that at manufactured exclusively overseas, especially in east Asia. Some due to labor costs, some due to environmental restrictions in 'the West,' some due to economies of scale where factories have expanded after getting started for one of the other reasons.
And, of course, the government emphasis on buying most items from the "lowest bidder" pushes contractors and would-be contractors to source their parts from the cheapest source that can meet specifications (or that says they meet specifications).
