I've stood on that exact spot when the USS Missouri was at Bremerton in the 70s. Being a former 509th Bomb Wing member I know the story of both bomb droppings well, including a first hand account by General Tibbets. Despite the naysayers, millions of lives were probably saved by using those 2 bombs.

As a lead up to that bombing. I was an American farmer Kid 5 years old, milking cows by my self that that morning, when the radio announcer broke in and said "this is real, it isn't a test" and repeated it three times before saying " The Japs just bombed Pearl Harbor". My first thought was where is pearl Harbor? I don't remember fishing there. I still remember that day very clear in my mind, The Jap leader was in Washington to talk peace on that morning, When his Military attacked Pearl Harbor and the hatred for all Japs even those in America that followed and brought America into that war. Every one in our community was very happy to hear of the Bombs dropping after seeing years of war films and seing American military bodies lives laying all over the ground. Many of us were happy to the many Jap's died. That brought the end to the WWII. I agree wwith LTC JOHN CHRISTENSEN that Millians of lives of military and civilian from all over the world were saved that day America dropped those bombs and ended that war.
