Media reports that Senate Democrats are planning a retreat to Napa Valley, California, amid the ongoing threat of a government shutdown that began at midnight on September 30, 2025, after Congress failed to pass a funding bill. The event is scheduled for October 13–14, 2025, which would fall during the second week of a shutdown if one persists.
The retreat, dubbed the "Napa Retreat," is organized by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) and was reportedly circulated by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.). It is intended for DSCC donors and select Democratic lawmakers, including potential attendees like Reps. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.), Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.), and other Senate candidates.
Activities include wine tours, upscale dinners, and access to the resort's spa and pool facilities.
They plan to stay at the Hotel Yountville, a five-star luxury resort in Yountville, Napa Valley, described as a "vineyard estate-inspired retreat" with Tuscan-European vibes, private fireplaces, oversized tubs, and on-site dining at Heritage Oak Café.
The event is funded by the DSCC through campaign donations and fundraising efforts, not taxpayer dollars. Lawmakers attending would continue receiving their salaries during a shutdown, as required by law, but the retreat itself is a private campaign activity separate from official government expenses. If the shutdown persists over this timeframe, we can take solace that some are enjoying the shutdown, while others, not so much.
