Hundreds of veterans, active service members, families of the lost, and dignitaries came to Mustin Field at the Navy Yard on Thursday for the opening ceremony of Homecoming 250, a commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States Navy and Marine Corps, both founded in Philadelphia in 1775.

How many lived in or near one of the large cities on the coast during the previous century and remember Fleet Week when Navy ships would spend a week in town with most of the crews on liberty and the ships open to public tours?
I know this was a big deal in NYC, Boston, Seattle, and some other cities.

I remember the 1976 sailing...I was in NYC and I was amazed...stood and watched for hours.

SGT Mary G. - Up through the mid-1970s that sub could have bee a Balao or Trench class GUPPY II, in which case that feeling of claustrophobia was well deserved.
