You must be aware of your surroundings at all times especially while out in public! Your mililtary status does not mean crap to most civilians. One time I thought I was going to have to choke slam some idiot when I was a recruiter. While at a university some professor threatened to spit on my uniform because I was a baby killer! Lucky for him he did not follow through on this threat.

Gunney, I am with you as I have been in an awkward situation before. My now ex-wife had asked me to go to a wedding with her, but my suits were in shipment. So, I wore my Service Dress because it was the only thing I had with me. I had no idea it was going to be almost all liberals at the wedding. I couldn't believe how many women came up to me calling me baby killer and yelling at me. I finally walked out and left the wedding.

When off-duty, remember, you are just another civilian. I find many things on other people's vehicles offensive, this never justifies me doing anything to them physically though. This "lynch-mob" mentality is getting out of control and needs to be punished.
