HENDERSON (KYTX) -- The country's second oldest living veteran recently passed away, but left behind an East-Texas legacy worth remembering.
Elmer Hill lived to be 109 years old, before passing away this past September. He spent time in the Navy during World War II as a gunner. He was responsible for his ship's cannons and when they would be fired.
Before he went to war, Hill grew up in Henderson and became a teacher there as well. Once he came back from the war, Hill quickly became principal Henderson High School, as it was called at the time. It wasn't long before the school decided to rename itself to "Hill High School" in honor of the war veteran.
Hill's two children, Ray Hill and Audrey Young, are currently putting together all the details for their father's funeral and are going through many of the items in the Henderson house they grew up in. Going through the many pictures and items made both Hill and Young become nostalgic.

Well he must have deployed somewhere to be a veteran unless there was a war in Henderson :-)
That being said COL Mikel J. Burroughs, Elmer Hill living to the age of 109 as a veteran is quite an achievement and spending the bulk of his life there i expect he was to positively impact many lives while he lived there.
