Yes that is what the Navy tried with the A6E Intruder. Some had new wings installed. Now it has been replaced by the FA18 superhornet, which doesn't have the range or the ordinance capacity of the A6. The Navy no longer has an all weather medium attack bomber.

I cannot give this one enough thumbs-up. The F-35 was initially meant to replace the F-16 role. It was NEVER designed to be a CAS platform. It only took 15 years to realize this, sadly.

I Love Your Meme of Rambo firing the thumbs up! It's this kind of machine gun or a Soviet equivalent that's going to take down a super Tucano or one of those modified Beechcraft ground-attack planes that look similar to a P-51 Mustang. There is no replacement for the A-10 Warthog and you never know when someone will have a machine gun like what Rambo is shooting to take out a light attack plane that's not expecting ground fire.
