I don't think there is any one factor, there are several. For you older duds here, look back at what is different from our environment 50 years ago and what we have today. One thing for me is values. Values have been eroded, many times for political correctness - we don't want to offend anyone. Eroding of family unit, values have added to the mix. I know we kids use to run around playing cowboys and indians, cops and robbers, yet we knew where reality was. Respect is a big one. We respected our teachers, parents, police, authority, our country. More than once I got swatted at school - you think I went home and complained to my Dad or Mom? - no way, I knew I'd get the same from them as they supported the teachers. Responsibility for my actions. We had no internet to set in a room, closed off from people, life reality. Most of our free time was spent outdoors with others doing "stuff". By no means were we perfect, but there were a different set of values we lived. I guess the list can go on and on. It's a complex of factors and one place I can see it needs to start is in the home. Slow down, do more as a family, take that time with kids, instill right and wrong, let them know there is a price to pay. I have left out religion on purpose as it's a whole can of worms, but I will say this - I believe there is a factor here as well.

Over the last decade, the murder rates in the US have substantially decreased. Gun ownership has substantially increased by almost all accounts. The decline in murder rates can be verified on the FBI murder statistics by year. I have put together the last ten years on a spreadsheet if anyone wants to see it.
