The US Army's first fight in Europe was not against the Germans - but instead the Vichy French in the US landings in North Africa. Most history looks past this, though it was a focus in our JPME course for the very reasons that it was a joint disaster. This is a great read and well written article.

Yes - a tough first combat in Europe. Luckily, half of the French had made their mind up that freedom was going to be the result. Double luckily is that losses on both sides were light.
