Many of those who live in the islands don't own the property their homes are on...it belongs to the government. They have long term (99 year leases on it) so this doesn't surprise me

Not true on the Big Island and I believe it's the same on Maui and Kauai. Most land there sells "fee simple." . . .

MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D. Our place in Orchidland was 'fee simple'. No way would I have bought a place with the 99 year lease.
