Taranto was more successful than Pearl Harbor from a tactical as well as strategic standpoint. Where Japan comes in is due to Perry's opening up of Japan and making Japan a "world nation." Japan had no idea how to do that, so they copied the world's best. They had America build/equip/train their army, Germany the air force and Britain built Japan's naval structure. So everything Britain did at sea was studied by Japan.
