Just looking at the Philippine Islamic problem, granting autonomous government to the Islamic island will only bred more so called Islamic extremists.
They are still cutting off Christian heads.
As long as Islam is preaching supreacy, there will be new blood flowing into name your Islamic terror group.
What is the answer? Islam only respects power. Give them over helming force when they step out of line.
Otherwise, submit to Islam. It appears, the Sunni section lives in the Philippines.
The basic connection with Islam, is it is at war with the world. Both State and non-State actors. It is not like dealing with any other ideology, or group.
Don't bring the problem into your backyard. Deport it.
Have a good evening LTC.

The wider lense in the PI is that of governance - and or the continuing issues with the South and Manila. The further south you go - the more the ideology of IS is in full spin. The means to fight it have been shown.. as have the means to full it. All hangs in the balance.

LTC Eric Udouj - LTC,
Do you think me too harsh on a political/religious system that causes chaos everywhere it goes? Those that bomb Churches, or murder little girls in their sleep for being Jewish are supported. How large a support I do not know. How big a chance do we take?
What will it take for good men like yourself to draw a line and order no more Mosques, or Madrassas past this point?
Am I correct they only understand power? History is my guide.
Have a good day Sir.

Mark - there is always another side of the coin... not often.. but there is in the PI. For centuries that line has been going the other way. Such is power.... and the resentment it does build there in that the power is to the north and not to the south. Because of it - the clashes continue over power -- not always the religions themselves. I never bought the whole clash of civilizations narrative for places like the PI. The corruption there drives so many of the narratives that we have seen Islamic group after group emerge as the champion of the people... or armed militia.. Is it the push back from the encroachment of religion that brings more into the folds in the South? Or is it the traditions in Mindanao that continue to stress that it is occurring?
