Part 2 of the author's advice for newbies. Aimed at MM's, but germane to Naval officers as well. The most telling one imo? "– Ears, Eyes and ECDIS in that order." (Electronic Chart Display and Information System). Why? I've seen countless (and even have done this myself) crew members get too wrapped up in watching the electronic track and not enough looking out at the horizon, something that I am sure is going to come into play in the recent collisions. That said, there's plenty of other good tips.

I wonder if the Navy would hire him to teach young SWOS. He definitely has experience and common sense, which seems to be lacking right now in the Navy. At this point, the Navy needs to reach out to anyone that can help (and if they are reading this, that doesn't mean me... I was horrible on the bridge although I never hit anything)!

That would take a level of humility that I would find surprising. Truth is, though, no single person (like Captain Konrad) is going to be able to effect the changes needed. Those changes need to be systematic and endemic. MM's can provide a good pool of experience, but at the end of the day, the Navy will have to be willing to listen to it. I hope they will be.

Most qualifying SWO are too busy pushing buttons and watching computer screens to admire the scenery outside the bridge windows.
