This can be so hit or miss when you live off of nothing except the local food. I've had some absolutely amazing meals, and I have had some that were essentially nothing more than meat that had turned fried in rancid ghee. The spicy Italian olive oil with the fresh bread in Herat was definitely memorable, but the cat food served by the French at another location was less than pleasant. The fatty hunks of meat in oily sauce is definitely a characteristic of the type of food you will see in any country in that region.

In Tunsia we ate what we called chem light chicken with jasmine rice and raisins. The olive oil on the chicken literally had a day glow quality to it and the jasmine rice and raisins was a real treat. Still, beyond the food of the region, I'd have to say the teas and coffees were by far my favorite.

Thanks for highlighting how good local food can taste SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL.
I had wonderful local food in Germany, Italy, Spain, Denmark and many other nations.
Learning to appreciate local food, customs, and people can be very important for deployed military personnel.

To be invited to share food with a group of Afghans is an honor and for the most part the food was great!

Can relate to that. In Thailand I was invited to a house blessing by one of the officers I worked with. Would have been an insult to refuse and even more of an insult to not eat the pickled pig testicles that were on my plate of food. Actually not that bad!
