I remember maybe a decade ago the Marines asking to take over the fight in Afghanistan from the Army.
I don't think it work out so well then or that it will now.
I see Afghanistan as their last hoorah. Yes Trump has surrounded himself with Marine generals but I see it as a tactical error.
He's feeding off the Marine Corps mystic. The fact is as a force the Marine Corps has been ready to go the way of the Do Do bird for a while.
I see this as a trying to save face act for a clear failure of Marine policy and leadership in Afghanistan.

I don't think I follow you... "The fact is as a force the Marine Corps has been ready to go the way of the Do Do bird for a while" What the hell are you talking about?
The fact is, one of the many Generals which Trump surrounded himself with (which includes all the branches) is Marine General Dunford. One of the most insightful and finest combat leaders I've served under as an Air Force Officer and military advisor. I personally briefed him in Afghanistan, and I know for a fact he listens to the expert opinions offered to him by all the branches of our military. He presented the previous President with a sound and realistic plan to set the Afghans on a self-sustainable path to peace and security. That expert advice was ignored.

If like to agree but there also other avenues to collect that intelligence I get troop deployments because I subscribed to the department of defense newsletter and it releases articles day by day of press briefings and deployment articles from units. That's how I knew the Hawaii National Guard was deploying a week before it made news and subscribing to it wasn't hard either just need an email address really.

Yeah but did you notice his description of "conditions based" withdrawal? I am glad Mattis has a better understanding of "conditions based" agenda than his boss does.
