Air Force beefing up pilot pipeline in 2019 budget to deal with shortage

The military has to compete with the airlines, who are hiring mid-career pilots & aviators at a high rate. The Air Force problem is they force their pilots to become drone operators. The other branches don't use officers for this work, they use enlisted personnel and contractors. They keep their pilots and aviators actually flying.
