Sounds like a small problem. Since Boeing already makes (made) the very successful KC-135 series that uses a similar boom system, I would think that a fix would be fairly easy for them.

Hardy Buggers that have been the workhorses for a long time. I figure it is about time for a Replacement or a Serious Upgrade.

It makes perfect sense for production to be delayed until all major operational problems have been worked through SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. I am glad that somebody has demonstrated maturity in delaying the production system for the C-17 until the areal refueling issue is resolved since a strategic transportation aircraft would be useful if it was not capable of aerial refueling.
It would make most sense if the receptacle which accepts areal refueling is standardized so that the new aircraft uses a receptacle which dos not require retrofits in other aircraft or the refueling telescoping tube.
