Remove the gun violence statistics for about 6 specific cities (most with stringent gun control control laws) within the United States, and the US is on the bottom of the list regarding gun violence in the world. Maybe we need to look at why society and the criminal justice system has failed in those cities.
300 million firearms of all varieties are estimated to be privately owned in the United States. Lets average 12 rounds per gun (extremely conservative estimate) for well over 3 billion rounds of ammunition privately owned in the United States. If there truly is a problem with firearms it would be painfully far more obvious.

It's hard to have a rational discussion with people on gun laws. Considering how prevalent training is in the military, I don't see a major issue with some sort of training being required for a permit. Strict bans are obviously useless, as the only people that obey the laws are already law abiding citizens. Actual enforcement of existing laws would be a good start.
All that being said, gun violence isn't technically the issue; violence as a whole is. Unfortunately you can't legislate people into non-violence.
