I have to be honest--I don't like the idea of transplanting, with little alteration, a culture and religion that leads the world in female oppression and discrimination. I cannot take someone seriously who says the burka or niqab is not an oppressive extension of their religion. They would absolutely be right that it's their choice to wear such a garment in Western countries, but it's not a choice in majority Muslim countries. I shake my head anytime I see a woman wearing a burka or niqab in the U.S. You or your family fled a country because of its poor values and culture, yet you're recreating the same oppressive values and culture by what you wear.
This isn't a generalization of all Muslims. Muslims that I have close relations with are less strict adherents and scoff at the idea of women having to wear the burka or niqab. In my view, they're the reformation Islam needs, not NPR advocating that women who put a little flare on their burka are leading the resistance.

All major world religions have promoted female oppression and discrimination in the past, while only a few still regularly do so today. I don't believe Islam is incapable of evolving in the same ways that both Christianity and Buddhism managed, and I suspect that this "next generation" Islam is a big move in the right direction.

SSG (Join to see) - female oppression in Christianity is really very poorly understood. Women were allowed to wear men’s clothes if they were called to an occupation that required them. St. Joan of Arc wore male clothing as a warrior, the Church recognized her need. It isn’t really all cut and dried. Females were allowed to rule. Etc. Women could and did wheel power and were every bit as vicious as men.

LTC David Brown - 1st Corinthians 11:3-9. A clear hierarchy is laid out in the bible. Fortunately most of those verses have been reinterpreted to mean something other than would be indicated by a plain reading of the words.
