I had heard of the vowel shift before, but had associated it with southern Michigan. Something that I've never read about, or heard mentioned is how much different the accent in the UP of Michigan, North Dakota, and some parts of Wisconsin and is from the rest of the Midwest.
When I went through basic training the drill sergeants made more fun of my accent than they did of anybody else's. I went to Toronto once and a couple of times I was asked where I was from, each time the person was surprised to find out that I wasn't Canadian.

Don't feel Lonely, Raised for the Most Part in Cincinnati, Took me a while before I could say anything without ending it "You Know". Took me even longer to know that words have actual meanings like saying something or someone was a "Communist Faggot" is wrong on so many levels. To compound that I have made my home in Hawaii and London incorporating that into my "Language" along with a Smattering of French I learned "With a Cajun Accent" according to my French Friends.

I was stationed in N.D. at Grand Forks AFB and went over to E. Grand Forks in Minn. s’times.. there was a short bridge between the two and park’g more plentiful in E. Grand Forks. Am Leg.
In Grand Forks was about 1:2 block from bridge.. and a Amn Leg./ V.F.W. Post In E. Grand Forks. Some joker had put signs on both sides for people to have passports ready.. the English had it’s own twist.. depend’g which side of the Red River fork you were on.. over in E.G.F.
They thought I might be from east end of state.. those in Grand Forks didn’t much give a care.. it was an interesting time there.. Up north a few miles at the U.S./Canada crossing there was a bit of difference.. not much.. Considering how close, I’d only been across at that point about 4 Times.. (2 were because we had to go up into Canada and come back down to get to Alpha site because the Twp road wasn’t cleared... we solved that.. broke few rules... tookour AF monster flightline snowblower and cleared
It from the main highway all the way to the other main road.. Nobody got defensive over it.. ) I’ve gone northwest in ND to Wahalla and there’s a marked difference in accent and meaning of words.. An AF Comrade from there went up into Canada a few miles to his Grandma’s town and people there were hutterites.. a lot of German spoken.. Great food.. German style cook’g of course.. Seemed to be a lot of hutterites moved down and assimilated into the Wahalla area.. you didn’t see the style of clothes as much
but the mannerisms could be seen..
