SGT (Join to see), there are many, many Hawaiians who still oppose being part of the United States. I've been there five times and on one visit, we encountered a group of angry young men who gave us the middle finger and yelled, "Yankee, go home!" We were on the road to Hana at the time.
I think the United States ultimately had to "have" the Hawaiian Islands rolled into the fold in some form or fashion (from a military perspective at the very least), but I'm certain we didn't handle it in the right way and certainly not to the satisfaction of native islanders. What form their association with the United States should have been, I don't know.
Believe me, the Hawaiian sovereignty movement is alive and well to this day.
