Thanks for sharing this. I've seen a couple of articles on rare-earth elements and this one is the best summary of where we stand and how we got there. Lack of foresight and subcoming to profit driven motivation certainly did no favors for the US in this area. Hopefully this is a hole we can dig ourselves out of.

When we were much younger Titanium was bandied about as a wonder metal - lightweight, strong, etc. The fact that it the supply was limited in mining to southern Africa in those days was interesting. Of course South Africa and Rhodesia were relatively stable and friendly to USA then :-)
Alliances shift, governments change hands, technology improves as time marches on.
I am not all surprised that the USA [not to mention China and Russia, India, Israel, Japan, etc.] have taken steps to "mitigate supply and demand issues."
