Story telling is the means used by indigenous people to pass on the history of their people. Usually, most bands have 1 or 2 individuals responsible for this duty, the "Tribal Story Teller." Then also family members pass on the stories of their particular family and clan. My wife's father was the family story teller (as most fathers are) but also their Clan story teller. He would "fill in" for one of the "Tribal Story Teller" if necessary. It was always considered a great honor to do so. Her mother could also tell family stories.
It is similar to my mother telling us stories of our family history, but the Dine' (Navajo) stories went back for many hundreds of years, whereas my mom only knew a hundred years or so of our history.
