Excerpt from The History Channel's The Presidents series featuring #17, Andrew Johnson
Thanks TSgt Joe C. for letting us know that December 29 is the anniversary of the birth of the 17th President of the United States, serving from 1865 to 1869 Andrew Johnson who was the first President impeachment by the House of Representatives. He indeed left office in 1869 after failing to win the 1868 Democratic presidential nomination.
It is noteworthy that southern democrat Andrew Johnson served as Vice President with Abraham Lincoln who was a northern Republican [first Republican president] in Lincoln's second term as President.
Since the assassin assigned to kill him, when Lincoln was assassinated, lost his nerve - Andrew Johnson became the first President to assume office after his predecessor had been assassinated.
Rest peace Andrew Johnson!
