Zero tolerance is a policy used when those in positions of authority have lost the ability to reason, to apply logic and appropriate punishment. It treats all infractions the same and we know they are not all the same. It keeps them from being accused of playing favorites too by punishing some and not others and having to explain themselves.
A kid defending himself from an attack from another is not the equivalent of the attacker. These policies put the attacker in a stronger position as those being attacked will be even less inclined to fight back because they will be punished too.
This sort of policy is what the highly educated think works in society. It is a poor substitution for fairness and justice even in non legal settings. My direction to my kids in schools with this policy were to defend themselves, period. I will deal with the fall out. Never take a beating from anyone for anything. No one has a right to strike you but that us what the schools are setting up. intentionally or not.

Ditto. My daughter's High School has publically stated they are now enforcing this idiotic policy.
I have instructed by daughter that if anyone hits her, she is to take them down (she takes Brazilin Ju-Jitsu). She is to submit them of possible, but if that fails she is to use any means necessary to defend herself.
If the school expels or suspends her for defending herself, I will happily take them to court and allow them to justify why a student can not defend themselves, but is instead supposed to stand there and get pummeled.
Stupid. Stupid policy.

Exactly. What the policy does, and I believe it is INTENDED to do, is protect the school administrators and teachers from litigation. It does this by removing the logic, reason, and judgement required for justice. A zero tolerance policy requires no judgement...it destroys any chance for justice for the children, but it protects cowardly administrators and teachers from exercising judgement.

Col Joseph Lenertz - You are right there. The innocent are punished with the guilty. Everyone gets expelled/suspended, period. No one can argue favorites are being played.
It is the lack of justice they want kids to get used to at a young age so when it happens at work (as we see men being fired for a mere allegation) or the judicial system (lack of justice for a Kate Steinlee) they will be used to it. Justice/fairness will become quant standards we used to practice but are no longer fair to all now. The criminal/aggressor/anonymous accuser etc. must be duly considered and taken care of too.

CPT Jack Durish There are two sides to this issue, something mirrored in the military. on one level, you should deal with this at the lowest level i.e. handling it yourself. On the other level, one has to ask why what preceded the escalation was not mentioned to those who have the resources (in some cases) to handle it more appropriately. This is a mixed message that does need some revision. People today need to learn to value themselves and also have the skills to effectively deal with situations with the flexibility to choose what is necessary to defuse the situation.
