At Da Nang, Vietnam in 1968-69 a number of times We got saved from the AC47 "Spooky" Gunships of the 9th Special Operations Squadron. Notice the ghost logo near the cockpit. after about 1.5 week at DaNang I got a front row seat of how effective they were as I was working a perimeter post on the area being attacked. . coming across the rice paddies toward our perimeter were 350 Viet Cong, none made it onto the base. I never even fired a shot on that attack , I didn't have to the gunship killed all 350 of them. A number of times "Spooky" got us out of problems. I can remember on another attack I had to look behind Me to see the gunship and forward to see the attacking enemy. also during that week a watched as several helicopter gunships came in and attacked, couldn't actually see the enemy on htat one as they were too far away and a tree line hid the view of that area. They were trying to come across from the other side of the Han River and none made it. One thing about the AC47 gunships though, response time was quick, htey only had to take off from our base at Da Nang, and not come from somewhere else. The first attack I mentioned our boss pulled up in His jeep and talked direct on a PCR25 radio to the pilot of the gunship which was just taking off and told Him exactly where the wanted the fire. once over the area the flares the gunship dropped lit the entire area and I could see everything that was happening. There actually were rounds from the gunship hitting within 100 feet of our perimeter fence.
