SSG(P) (Join to see) - Because she is in a party coalition with the Liberals or SPD, thats what limits her ability. SPD and CSU has fallen in numbers compared to other German Parties on the ascendency in Parliament seats. So they both had to compromise and form a coalition to rule together. She is also apolitical so even without the SPD, not sure she would go too much further right.

Merkel is an accomplished, intelligent, well-mannered, stoic leader who does what she sees as best for her country, often over party politics or personal gain. Civilization could use more of those.

After the beating her party took in the recent election, I think she had no choice to say this or they would have forced her out... This gives them time to get someone else ready to run.

I am not certain that the candidates run for office. I was under the impression that the party's leader with a majority of seats, or who can create a coalition with a majority of seats becomes Chancellor.

CPT (Join to see) - I think that is close but the party head or future Chancellor is selected by the party prior to negotiations to create a ruling coalition. Merkel never ran for office, she was picked by the CSU to be the Party Lead which made her de facto Chancellor once the CDU/CSU and SPD negotiated the coalition agreement and who gets what as Party lead she led the negotiations.
