APOD: 2025 March 19 - Blue Ghost s Diamond Ring

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to this edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for March 19, 2025.
There have been many published photos of last week's (March 14th) lunar eclipse, but none quite like this. The Blue Ghost spacecraft successfully landed on the Moon March 2nd, and turned its cameras back towards home to capture this image of Earth completing its eclipse of the Sun. The bright 'Ring of Fire' we see from Earth during a similar celestial alignment becomes a gentler 'Circle of Life' ring of blue sunlight diffracted through our atmosphere. Glad some engineers somewhere remembered to take a picture.

A1C Medrick "Rick" DeVaney - Imagine if the grandparents long gone could see us (earthlings) now and our trajectory through science that seems to be careening forward without a safety net. They lived through some amazing times too as children when their parents were adults . . . with folks on the verge of introducing quantum mechanics and field theory . . . while all the wonderful inventions electricity could be used for were happening. (mine were born just before the turn of the century on one Grandma as last as 1900.
