APOD: 2025 March 6 - Starburst Galaxy Messier 94

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to this edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for March 6, 2025.
Messier 94 (M94) was discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1781 and catalogued by Charles Messier two days later. It is located in the constellation Canes Venatici (The Hunting Dogs) and lies ~16 million light years from Earth.
If you suspect the luminosity of M94 is useful, you would be correct. Scientists use spectral lines to identify the presence of different elements (Hydrogen, Oxygen, etc) in a medium. The spectral lines associated with M94 as a light source provide indicators of ionized Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen. American astronomer Carl Seyfert first noticed these spectral 'fingerprints' across ~10% of known galaxies in a paper published in 1943. As a result, these galaxies are collectively referred to as Seyfert galaxies.
This APOD Hubble archive photo was first published in 2015. It is certainly worth another review today.

WOW!!! what a massive face-on spiral galaxy, which is about 30,000 light-years across!!! The numbers of stars included looks endless from this view and if you extrapolate this, the numbers of Planets or planetoids must be mind boggling!!! Outstanding APOD Share today, Maj William W. 'Bill' Price!
