A lot of those were common knowledge. One they frequently miss is that the earth is bajillions of years old as is the moon, etc. So as theres' no wind in space, there should be a veritable ocean of dust on the moon's surface as you would expect from bajillions of years of accumulation. So the lunar lander should have "floats" to "ride" on the dust. Imagine their surprise when the lander went "thud" at a "depth" of one inch. Ooops. Looks like the place isn't as old as "science" thought...
