I took a friend to Pinnacle Peak Steak House in Tucson AZ shortly after we got out of OTS. The steakhouse has a rule that no ties are allowed and we were in our dress blues.
Normally, if anyone comes in wearing a tie the waitress rings a cow bell and comes over with these oversize scissors and cuts the tie off and staples it to the rafters with your card. I knew this because I had grown up in Tucson and this is one of the best steak houses in town (We generally went out of our way to bring visitors there and make sure they are wearing a tie).
While we were eating our dinner I overheard a woman behind me telling the waitress that we had ties on, and the waitress said that the one exception to the rule was that they didn't cut ties off of anyone in uniform.
Expecting our ties to be cut off, I had a couple of ties out in the car, but I still got a chuckle out of it.

That was a different sort of "special dispensation" than we usually got during the Viet Nam War - and very surprising at the time.
