Great Post!. It reminded me of a time in late 1979 when as an Aviation Explorer Scout sponsored by the UGA AFROTC Detachment we visited a SAC alert facility. We were able to get on board a B-52 with some crew men and ask some questions. It was amazing to see how many consoles were already out dated due to no longer using particular munitions. I still remember them telling me the last "new" B-52 was made in 1962. That is a proof itself just how well made those bombers are!

I think there was a greater bomber than the BUFF. Without the B-17 force (and the escorts) going toe to toe with the German Air Force it might not have been possible to force the GAF out of France in time for a 1944 invasion.
Notes on the photos. Not sure how they will format. B-17's pay a visit to the FW-190 plant at Marienburg, 10/9/43. A little plastering surgery.
Lost wing over Italy. Amazingly 5 crewmen got out and survived.
Medal of Honor winner "Red" Morgan's (he won the MoH previously) B-17 seconds before it exploded. Morgan was thrown clear holding his parachute.
GAF head on attack.

This is the "bomb run" sequence from Dr. Strangelove. I do not own the copyright and this clip is for educational and analysis purposes only.
I will just leave this little bit of awesome here to honor the noble BUFF
