Collecting benefits would be determined by the type of discharge -- question if he is mentally competent or just attention seeking.

Technically it's not awol unless it's 30 or more days, it's just a UA, according to the navy anyway, I would think it's awol but it's not

Navy doesn't use AWOL.... we use UA.. or missing ships movement depending on the circumstances .(its the same thing)...after 30 days ots desertion.
