Im a HAZMAT tech, and have a degree in physics. I spent countless hours trying to convince people radiation in and of itself is part of nature. Didn't always go over so well.

Not quite the Credentials you've got but I've done a few courses and served on 2 Nuclear Cruisers and it isn't quite the boogey man to me that it is to most.

I live in the West Coast. The hysteria around the "nuclear cloud" following Fukishima was interesting

My spouse is a Nuclear Engineer and works for one of the National Labs. Right now she is travelling around the country working at Public Meetings to to discuss Consent-based Siting of Nuclear waste. Interesting topic. Anyone can attend. http://www.energy.gov/ne/consent-based-siting

For most people, comparing relative risks are a challenge.
I recall during the Chernobyl accident, some very concerned Europeans were refusing to consume fresh dairy products as they nervously lit up another cigarette.
Or during the aftermath to Fukushima, the outcry from some nervous citizens on our west coast, as they drank bottled water without regard to BPAs or other potentially leaching chemicals.
