They changed this up some time ago- it is how it is classified. We "deploy" all the time, but the deployments do not count towards the bucket/rainbow system of deploying. We can have a pilot or a flight doc deploy to several areas in support of OIF/OEF and if the Mob comes along they will be required to go again right away. We are losing pilots and docs because of it. It affects their benefits, retirement, and GI Bill as well SGT (Join to see)

But why is it happening Maj Marty Hogan? Why treat the NG as a second class citizen? Combat is combat, regardless of your part in the Military. This isn't right no matter how anyone tries to dress it up.

SGT (Join to see) - I think it rolls back to benefits. The GI Bill has become a monster and for every 30 days a member is deployed it counts towards an entitlement on their deployed GI Bill. Health care side- this is utilizing figures from 2010 I believe and I don't have concrete references- just what we looked over in my HSA training: currently the health care cost of all retirees and those serving constitutes over 50% of the operating budget for the DOD. So before we carve up the turkey each year- we remove over half to cover those costs. I don't have a percentage on bonus, loan reimbursement programs, and recruiting incentives and that is to get people in the door or retain them along with the GI Bill. I am not siding with them- but as a former bean counter putting fact to paper. Those were figures utilizing 2010 dollars as I said.
So in short- the misguided F-35 gazillion dollar program, ships that break down and misfire at a cost of $50M, Army equipment ready to fall apart on itself we find us where we are today. When they put money into the service the Defense Contractors eyes get huge and they woo it away on useless crap. Knee jerk reaction is to reduce the force because that makes our air-frames and weapon systems newer better faster right? Then benefits start getting picked over- no one in Congress loses a benefit for misappropriation of any of the above- but it falls to the soldier, sailor, airman etc.
Sorry for the long rant- not an easy because of a- b suffers. You know I am long in the tooth in my career and closer to the end than the beginning. I have watched fraud, waste, and abuse for almost 33 years; I have not even broached the subject of the cost of doing business in Central Asia for the past 25 years and still looking at another 50-75 years being there???
No it is not fair and believe some of the changes were born of sequestration, military drawbacks, and pork that has not come to light yet.

Maj Marty Hogan - But, why is is happening? LOL
Just kidding you. Thank you for your explanation. I am still not happy about the way our troops are treated. I think a person joins the Military for different reasons, but for reasons they are promised before they join. It's not their faults the Government doesn't know how to do good banking. When I was in, I wanted my pay amount to increase, not decrease, and most certainly because I was employed by the U.S. Government, who wanted me to keep my promise, as I wanted them to keep their promises. I would think today's recruits feel the same way. It's a damn shame the shape we're in because of the very ones who expect more out of us than they do themselves.

CPT David Jones, It really is
I'll bet those fine print lines aren't discussed during enlisting.

Two guys I served with were treated like second class after being deployed to the Middle- East a few years ago, promised that their college would be handled. BS.

Anything to get them to sign on the dotted line SGT David A. 'Cowboy' Groth. That should be against the law, lying to them like that. But, that's how our Government shows appreciation.
