Army taking hard look at returning drill sergeants to AIT

Everyone talks about oh we want drill sergeants and we want them to bring discipline, the standard and we want them to do their job however, when we as drill sergeants agree to do our job the powers to be like, well let's not do it so much like the standard let's do it like so. Let's not PT every day let's do it every other day.
Drill sergeant let's not use PRT as a reinforcement for discipline let's have them use critical thinking instead.
Let's not raise our voice but instead let's talk about what happen and give me examples of what you will do next time because they have feelings and they just can't handle that yet

I think it's a good idea. When I went through AIT I had the same Drills the entire time, and they were professional assholes the entire time. You feared them, hated them, but you RESPECTED them. The only time a Drill acted "normal" was when you graduated and they were yelling for everyone to GTFO of their CTA. But looking at some of the Drills I knew before retirement, it was like their hands were tied in BCT, and smoke sessions were a joke compared to days of old (limited number of repetitions). I knew a few PSG's and they were frustrated also. Can't yell, smoke, or really do anything that would be found in a line unit. If you're going to tell these NCO's to mentor, train, and promote, then the senior leaders need to give them every tool in the box even if it means going back to the "old days" and bringing them forward. In this I'd have real smoke sessions. Canteen or camelback and let the DS correct them from the front leaning rest. That won't fix everything, and there will be a few abusers of it, but it's one tool in BCT/AIT that will get your attention. When I reclassed at Gordon, it was a mind blowing moment; I NEVER talked to my DS. They talked to ME, and I was always at Parade Rest. Not at Gordon. It was almost like the student had the power and the DS were just there to push them to class. No Parade Rest, no "real" smoke sessions, personal phones and game systems. Eight man bays. I was blown away when the students ate, they got to taste the food. So in my first five years in I go from dickhead professional hardass DS to being in the NCO barracks and talking to the DS at Gordon and listening to the ones I knew complain about the overbearing regulations made to "baby" new recruits. Take BCT/AIT/OSUT back to the future.

It will fix some of the discipline problems if the DS's get back some more of their power base. This kinder and gentler Army is only going to get worse. This job is not for everyone so if your feelings get hurt either suck it up and move on or find a job where the hugs are free...
