PO1 William "Chip" Nagel The late wife’s, German great grand mother was born into a German speaking community of Tiffin, OH in 1849, she passed away in Los Angeles in 1937 without ever learning to speak English.
As a child in Dearborn, MI in 1944, I was frustrated when I could not communicate with the Polish proprietors of the little market on the corner. That is when I developed the theory that within five years of arrival in the US that every immigrant should learn to speak and understand enough English to be able to return to their residence from a distance of five miles away. I continue to feel that should be a requirement for continued residency in America!

Before Grandma Emily passed from Alzheimer's She Might start a Conversation in English but Usually finished in German. Still a Significant South and Central American Community here in Kansas City and I'm More Disappointed that I Don't Speak Spanish, I Vacation in Oregon where there is a Serious South, Central American Community and Russian Community and I'm Disappointed I Don't Remember More Russian. As a Youth People in this Country used to be Encouraged Highly to Learn Foreign Languages . You Learn Latin and You've already a Leg Up in Learning French, Spanish and Italian. Before Vatican II the Catholic Mass was Always Done in Latin. No I'm not Busting Others Chops for My Short Comings,
