Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to this edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for March 4, 2025.
I suspect today's featured photographer planned this image several days ahead of time, but I also suspect the result exceeded their expectations. Each feature is annotated on APOD page itself (just mouse over the photo). In the foreground is the 10th century Sacra di San Michele (Saint Michael's Abbey). In the background is the significantly younger 18th century Basilica of Superga. Both locations are in the Turin, Italy metropolitan area.
Moonrise can provide some interesting possibilities, and this one from approximately two weeks ago did not disappoint. Blue light is diffracted (hence the red color) and the lunar disc was distorted by differences in temperature and pressure in the Earth's atmosphere. To top it all off, an airplane was flying by high enough to still catch direct sunlight.

That really is quite a different photo than the usual. I really appreciated the explanation of the appearance.

Fun fact: Hold up a No. 2 wooden pencil at arm's length and its diameter will block your sight of the Moon regardless of its apparent size in the sky
