Actually Operation Barbarossa was launched on 22 June 1941 SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL by the German Army and Air Force as they hoped to defeat the USSR before the Russian Winter set in. Hitler and Stalin had made a pact which enabled German to sweep through the low countries and France. Once that was accomplished Hitler turned his focus towards the USSR and broke
The Battle of Stalingrad took place over a year later. Von Paulus VIth Army was sacrificed by Adolph Hitler because he did not want a German Army to retreat.
The German's were able to mount strategically offensive operations until their armored forces were defeated at the Battle of Kursk in the summer of 1943.

Have you read George Nipe's "Last Victory in Russia"? If you haven't I highly recommend it. It goes into the German unit commander's contemporary reports and the Germans may have lost far less armor than the Soviets reported. Regardless, the Germans did not achieve their strategic objectives and as you say lost their last chance to change the direction of the Eastern Front. What they did achieve was blocking the Soviets for another year.

SPC Kevin Ford - I haven't read George Nipe's "Last Victory in Russia." I have read many other books from the German and Russian perspectives. My ability to read Russian is rusty. I hope to refresh my knowledge of that language because it helps understand a lot about the eastern front.

LTC Stephen F. - Col Glantz seems to be the expert in deciphering the original Russian reports. Well if you ever make it to CT, I've got a copy you can borrow.
