Beirut barracks blown up

In 1983, our ship USS Bainbridge CGN-25 was about to exit the Mediterranean Sea after a six month Deployment and slapping Libya's Qadhafi around by crossing his "Line of Death" called operation El Dorado Canyon in 1983. When the Barracks was blown up, we were were turned around and ordered to escort a Marine detachment arriving from Little Creek, VA. to the to the eastern Med and supply anti-aircraft support for them. Our return to our home port was delayed by 4-5 months because of the unrest in Lebanon.

Old school chum was there shortly afterwards with the detachment of Marines he belonged to, to locate and retrieve those that had been killed by the blast.
