One of my many Army opportunities was I got to walk the streets of East Berlin in U.S. Army Class A uniform along with other members of my company. We were in West Berlin for a two week FTX at their MOUT training site. That was in the Summer of 1985, a few months after Major Nicholson was shot and his driver had to watch as he bled to death as the Russians would not let him render first aid.

As part of the status of forces agreement we could tour West Berlin with x amount of Soldiers per day and the Russians could do the same with West Berlin.......though I never saw a Russian tour bus on the West Berlin side while I was there. We were all followed on foot by the East German Police but were free to go anywhere we wanted to go in the city of East Berlin according to the agreement........there were no real no-go areas as far as I was told but I guess Major Nicholson found one.

One of the other opportunities was we were taken to Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp where Anne Frank died to see the exhibit there. That was an incredible feeling of sorrow there that didn't escape anyone on that tour. It descended like a fog and only lifted after we drove out of the place.
