His friend "Barney Oldfield" the trendsetters of the day. Back then racing was VERY dangerous with little in the way of safety requirements.

Yes, when my great uncle died during an event in 1941, they had no safety belts, and helmets were leather, and uniforms were white shirts n pants. Racing has come a long way since then.
